We did Moby Dick! the Musical at my high school last year, and our mast fell because the threading on the screws that held it loosened. One of our senior castmembers picked it up, screwed it back in and played it off as nothing (along with the rest of the cast). After the show, when we told some of our friends and family members who saw the show about the mast malfunction, they thought it was added for dramatic effect or something. Hey, it worked out well.

When we did Sweeney Todd my senior year we had a giant mishap. We built a chair/trapdoor thing that lowered like a chute for Sweeney’s victims to slide down; the chair was screwed onto the chute so it wouldn’t slide down too. But one night part of the wood on the chair split so when Sweeney slit Judge Turpin’s throat and pulled the lever, the chair almost went crashing after him. Good thing Sweeney reacted quick enough to grab the chair - and he didn’t miss a beat in the song! I was talking to our light board op afterwards and some audience members told us they didn’t notice a thing, I couldn’t believe it.
